reading through your first post in this thread again, there was a hint towards fader calibration in there as well... but I did not make the connection with my problem. Now on to the remaining issues!

Sometimes it hard to see a tree when one is in the middle of a forest.
I run Fader Calibration at least once a month. Preventative maitanence.
Hope you get your other issues working. Then back to Recording and Mixing

Ok, so here is a final post on this topic: I just want to say a big thanks to the forum members that provided input. I now have what seems to be a fully functioning system again. I have not yet fixed the burnt capacitors on the 9-fader-PCB, but used the one from the other desk instead. However, I have replaced the 100nF caps on the brain board that are said to be responsible for the rail voltage problem. The audio has been working on this unit from the beginning on.

I have added a CF card reader and installed the 5.1 OS with all the effects plugins - nice! Also, I have now 3 MFX and 1 UFX card installed. This triggered another question: is it normal that some time after starting the system the effect algorithms are transferred to the console? I am not changing anything or loading a new session, it just seems that the console forgets what the previous settings were?

Now, I have a second system that doesn't have any audio, and a burnt 9-fader-board. I'm sure I will get back here when I start reassembling this and trying to get it back to full working status.

Are you saying that after shutting down after a session the effects etc go back to startup, if that's so then that's the way it's supposed to be unless you chose to "restore the previous session" on boot up, this will open your last mix as long as it's saved when you shutdown.
It's much better to bootup with the Startup session, less things can go wrong that way.

Yes, I was just surprised that it seems to take a while before the system actually starts with the "Uploading...." message after it is up and running. I was thinking that there is no need to upload the plugins (again) since I started with the same session as when I shut the system off, but of course that would require some flash or battery backup memory which is probably not to be expected from a system that old .

The only effects that don't need to be loaded are UFX
