Creating an ftp connection with d8b

Hi all;

I'm trying to create a network between my laptop, running Microsoft XP, and the d8b running 5.1.

I have Mike River's Book (The last Hard Disk Recorder...), which paints a very easy process for making this happen.

I have tried and tried but it will not happen. Either on my d8b or my HDR.

I changed the Cat5 cable twice.

Here is what I have done

- Connected my Laptop to the d8b with a CAT5e cable. I have green lights on the laptop and on the d8b. Both are lit solid.

- Have checked the box in the Setup/FTP menu of the d8b to allow FTP connection.

- Opened "My Network Places" on my laptop.

- clicked on "Add A Network Place". this opens the a dialog box "Welcome to the Add A Network Place" Wizard.

- Clicked on "Next"

- Dialog box changed to "Where do you want to create a network place?" note: also in this dialog box is "Service Providers" and "Choose another network location"

- Click "Next".

- Dialog box changes to "What is the address of this network place?"

- I enter "ftp://10.10.28.20" (found in the FTP Setup Window of the d8b).

- Click "Next"

-New Dialog box comes up "The Folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another".

I'm now lost!

I can not create a new folder. It will not let me.

Any thoughts?

what IP has your Laptop ?

- I suggest to use something like 10.10.28.xx (xx=everything but not 20)

- If you connect it directly you normally have to use a crossed CAT5 cable. Otherwise use a Switch in between (with two CAT5).

- can you ping the CPU? open in Windows the "cmd", type "ping 10.10.28.20" and press enter. you get as respone some [ms] or a timeout if you do not have a connection

I will see what I can do with your response. I am not a computer person, per say, but understand some of what you are saying.

I don't know what my IP address address is on my lap top, or where to look, but I'll dig around.

I will check to see if my cat5 cable are crossovers.

I know what a ping is (I think) and will try doing what you suggest.

Don't know what "cmd" is? and I assume "ms" is mili seconds?

If I change the IP address of the d8b I assume I need to change the IP address of my laptop?

if you have a Network Switch somewhere, then simply connect your Laptop to the Switch and your d8b cpu to the Switch.
then you do not have to care about crossed/non crossed Network cables

MS=milliseconds, right

cmd I mean (in Windows) press the Windows key on your Keyboard, Keep it pressed and press "R". A window opens.
there tye "cmd" and Enter.

now you can ping (just type ping and the IP of your d8b cpu)

if you do not get respond type
ipconfig and press enter

then you will see your IPv4 IP Adress of your Laptop and a Mask Address usually 255.255.255.0
this means that the first 3 numbers of the IP of the d8b/cpu must match with your Laptop IP otherwise you will not see the d8b CPU.

Hey Muck;

So, thanks for the detail, here is what I found.

Typed (using cmd) "ping 10.10.28.20", than "enter" got a response, 3 lines with those numbers very quickly, then it went away.

Typed (Using "cmd"), "ipconfig", then "enter" got the following

Windows IP Configuration
Ethernet Adaptor Local Area Connection:
Connection.specific DNS Suffix........:
IP Address....................................:10.10.28.10
Subnet Mask..................................:255.0.0.0
Default Gateway.............................:

What I think this tells me, is it found the d8b (10.10.28.20), and it's IP address is 10.10.28.10. So it looks like it is connected.

What this mean to me is, not a lot, as I still can not get a network connection to happen.

Any further thoughts?

I don't want to add to your misery....but I feel this may help you. When we first started testing communicating between the D8B and a computer, we had a lot of trouble....much like what you are going through. It was a mess. So I whined to Bob (Tudor) about it.


Bob said: "Use an FTP Client and stop whining".

I am on the Mac platform and I found that Transmit worked immediately. It was literally a no-brainer. I was into the the D8B's drive 30 seconds after launching it for the first time (and entering the relevant info).

I know you're not on the Mac platform, but surely there must something available for free or really cheap out there that will do the job on a PC. Here's a screenshot of the entry window....and one other important thing that Bob suggested: the "/" in the Remote Path field. I don't remember why, but it won't work without it.

Hi Frank;

Windows XP does have an FTP Client service built in. I have used it to connect to my HDR and it was easy and quick. Worked like a charm, then..... it started acting differently. It wouldn't connect me to the drive that was in the machine, but was hanging onto the previous drives or even drives that where from 5 drives previous, so I deleted the connection (not sure if that is the correct terminology) and since then have been unable to make the connection again. I get what you see in the above.

It should be easy to do but something has changed or I'm missing something (which is likely what it is).

I assume you are suggesting I change the IP address of my d8b to 100.100.280.250, then connect to that through my ftp?

I tried the 100.100.280.250 and got the same results, but then again, I'm probably not doing something wrong! Just So you know what what steps I did....... I changed the d8b to that number and then tried to have "Windows XP, Create A Network Place" find it. No luck.

The odd thing is, when I shut the d8b off, while the computer is on, it tells me a network has been dropped or a cable has become unplugged. This, I believe, tells me the connection is there!
