I used to have two of those Altec 436C comps. I sold one off to fund a Groove Tubes CL1-S that is beyond cool. I love the Altec on bass. It is a mojo piece for sure. I wish I had the Chandler to try, their stuff doesn't suck. Congrats on the new toys.

Have you put a balance pot in the Altec yet?

The Chandler is a great piece of kit and is cleaner and more positive than the Altec, but it can still produce valve saturation, as you know it was copied from three original RS124's and is the closest thing to the real thing IMO, Ok the transformer etc is not identical, but the sound it produced outshines the 346c and from what I hear it sounds close to the 60's recordings which is what I was after.

In normal mode, it does what it says on the box, but the Superfuse mode is something else again, especially on bass.

The only thing I have done to the Altec is to add a faster attack of 25mls, the original is of course 50mls.

What is the switch on the Altec above and to the left of the Release pot? I can't quite make out what it says.

I am running an MPX1 and TC as well.

Have you checked out the TVS3? The best (valve) echo unit for reproducing Meazzi Echomatic, Binson, Vox Longtom echoes

Cool mod with the switch.

I haven't checked out the TVS3. I am completely unfamiliar with that unit, I'll have to research, like I need another piece of gear at the moment...

You won't find a use for the TVS3 unless you want to recreate the echo patterns (with the correct head spacings and W&F) for very early 60's Meazzi, also, Binson and Longtom units, it's mainly for The Shadows type recordings Crash.

This was done with it and also thelead guitar through the RS124 which was on the original recording at Abbey Road..

BTW, it was recorded and mixed to sound as per the original 45rpm warts and all! and includes such stuff as sound overspill from instrument to other mics. etc. etc.

1962 Strat, TVS3, VOX AC30Handwired, Fender Jazz Bass, Taylor acoustic and BFD2 drums.

Yea, I went to the website and checked out some youtubes. It's cool but a one trick pony in a genre I don't do much. Digging the tune, it does what it does well.

Expensive, but you get what you pay for I guess!
