Mackie Remote control of the d8b??

Postby badgeronkeys » Wed Nov 11, 2020 1:16 pm

Hello all,

Probably wishful thinking and I think I know the answer but does anyone know if the Mackie remote which can be used with the HDR could be connected to the d8b for remote transport control? I believe the Mackie Remote uses an Ethernet connection to the HDR. The d8b also has an Ethernet card so is there just a possibility the 2 are compatible? This would be a really neat way of running the desk whilst on the other side of the studio...

I did read the manual and there is no mention of this.

Thanks in anticipation!

The Mackie remote uses an Ethernet cable to connect the two (HDR and Remote) together. At that point the similarity with ethernet ends...the protocol that the remote uses appears to be more like MIDI than ethernet. From memory, I thing the HDR has warnings printed on the back panel about not plugging ethernet into the remote socket.

I believe that you need to have an HDR/MDR/SDR to utilise a remote.

Thanks for the reply John. I figured this must be the case as there would likely have been a lot of users out there already doing it. Shame though, this would be a great capability!

All the best,
Martin

What do you record to?

If it's a computer with a DAW and a fairly current one, then there's possibly a remote app for the DAW available. And if you sync the D8B and your DAW together, starting/stopping the DAW with the remote app from your phone or tablet, would also start/stop the D8B.

I know that Logic and Studio One have such remote apps. I haven't really looked into remote apps for other DAWs, but would kind of expect that everyone is doing this nowadays, to be competitive.

I did exactly what I'm describing here, by using an old iPad 2 with Logic Remote on it, when sitting behind my drum kit (...my iPad is too old, to do the same with Studio One, but technically it would be possible, too).

...and if you DO have an HDR and record to that via the D8B and have them synced together properly... well, then the remote would also control both, the HDR and the D8B, of course, haha.

So, back to the main question: What do you record to?

Hi Y-my-R,

I'm running Logic v10.1.1 (2015) on an early 2008 Mac running El Capitan v10.11.6. Transport control works seamlessly between the Mac and d8b and vice versa so no issues for "at the desk' control with the DAW.

I did download Logic remote for my iPhone but it looks like it won't work with my version of Logic. Not sure when the remote function was implemented but it looks to be on a later release. And that's my conundrum...

Right now everything works. I've a load of plugins (largely Waves v9 and a few v10). The d8b is hooked up through a Liquid Saffire 56 with 16 digital and 8 audio in and out. It works! I may appear like a Luddite but I've avoided any further software updates for fear of it all falling over. Very much a case of "it ain't broke, don't fix it"!

If there's an option to update without a disaster, I'm definitely open to it!

Cheers,
Martin

I did a quick search, and it looks as if Logic Remote was introduced with Logic 10.1, so I think this should generally work:

https://www.macprovideo.com/article/log ... ic-pro-101

Two reasons I could think of why it's not working right now:

1. Mac and iPhone aren't on the same WiFi network. Are they? If the computer is connected with an Ethernet cable, try to also connect it via WiFi, if it has that. If not, there's USB WiFi dongles available that you can use with desktop computers, to get them to work with WiFi and remote apps like that.

2. The Logic Remote version may be too new for your old version of Logic, but I'm not sure if this could cause issues. I'm also not sure if it's possible to still get older versions of iOS apps, since the release of a new app, usually replaces the old app in their shop and for downloads (but I may be wrong about that).

I'd recommend to check #1 first, as #2 may not have a solution (other than updating, which I understand you're trying to avoid).

Best of luck!
