Again so many questions and excited to be (nearly) in the d8b club
I have at present a rme hammerfall system. it has a rme card in my pc which has a firewire connection on it that connects to the rme hammerfall breakout box. does the d8b connect to the breakout box?

Digiface or Multiface?
What cards do you have in your d8b's tape return slots?

its a multiface
not sure what cards are in the d8b, i think it might be just the stock world clock?
edit: ive been told the cards are:
The Desk has 3 DIO Cards. (Optical)
Standard word clock card
Version 3.0...
It was the bonanza pack which came with the MFx and UFX card.
There is AES and Spdif I/O card

The Multiface do have analog inputs, right? So you don't need the Apogee card as of yet.
If you had a Digiface you could connect the d8b via ADAT optical.

The Multiface has that one ADAT port which can be switched from ADAT (8 channels) to S/PDIF optical (two channels).
* Make sure it's set to ADAT (should be the default).
* Connect it via lightpipe to the DIO8 in the d8b's #1 I/O slot (has to be #1).
* Set the Multiface's wordclock (Pref Sync Ref) to ADAT In (not ADAT sync).
* Make sure the sample rates match between the two devices.
That should work. We used to have to do this before the Apogee clock card was released.
The d8b can be very finicky about active digital devices connected to it during startup. Most likely you will want to boot up the d8b first, make sure it's completely booted, then turn on the Multiface.
