Pro Tools & d8b

Postby Freqabeat » Tue May 08, 2012 7:06 pm

So, have a basic config question, I am running my d8b with my Pro Tools setup. I am running via ADAT thru 3 Motu 2408's (one mk3 as main and the others are mk1's). So here comes the question and sorry if its something I should know; is it possible to send the aux/busses from PT into the d8b so that I have more hands-on control? I really at most use about 3 or 4 aux/busses, but i use them on all audio channels.

Can you not just assign the AUX's/buses to the motu outputs?

I can do that, but how would I route them into the d8b?

I produce/engineer studio/live work for R&B and churches so let me break down a typical Pro Tools mix down session:
* 24 channels to mix down including beat/instrumental
* 1 Master channel
* 1 headphone mix
* 3 Aux faders for chorus, reverb and delay

As of right now, I don’t use the HUI on the board because I want to see how the d8bridge for Mac is going to work out once released. So I send each channel out via ADAT from my mk3 to the d8b, but I lose the aux’s. This is a problem because once at this step I usually mix back into Pro Tools stereo 2 track.

Well, 2 Choices the way I see it. But, maybe someone else has a different solution.

1) sacrifice 4 channels for your aux's and only have 20 channels for mix down or......

2) buy another adat card to put in the alt slot as well as another motu 2408 to give you 32 channels during mix down.

One will probably cost you about 300.00 and the other is free. I guess it's a sacrifice either way......either with channels or money.

Maybe you could group some tracks that don't necessarily need their own channel on the d8b together in PT and have just stereo channels on the board for them. Example: group your toms and overheads together and mix those ITB and send the stereo channel to the d8b.

Now, I was already thinking about running the second way and getting another card for the alt slot, but here’s the question, would all the aux’s for each channel be controlled in Pro Tools, or is there a way to manipulate each channels aux directly on the board?

Hi,

Sorry if im being thick here, but one 2408 does 24 chnls in/out. Three pairs of light pipes. With an analog card in the d8b, u could use the second 2408 to tie in the auxs, I guess i must be missing somethin real basic. Sorry if i misunderstand.

Guido, you are correct I forgot that bit of info. But there is no reason to buy the analog card either. If all your doing is mix down you can assign the aux's to the analog outputs of one of the 2408's and send those to the first layer(1-24) of the d8b.

Now as for freqabeat's question on aux control for PT from the d8b. No. You would have to midi map those controls and PT does not allow for midi mapping. your best bet would be to get the HUI layer up and running if you want that kind of control. Or you could use the aux outs on the d8b and send those into one of the 2408's analog inputs, do your processing and then return the channels to the first layer as described before. That's a lot of conversion though.

Sory but i kinda been up this things ass alil lately, and if PT can do learned key commands { and enuff of what the op wants to do is available as key commands in PT} the u could use a program like Bomes midi translator pro to take the HUI commands and send out ASCII keypreses...like this...viewtopic.php?f=2&t=395#p4570

I now have a bomes Preset that turns the HUI layer into Mackie control. Sorry bout the OT here freqabeat. here...

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=620#p4662

i have a new version of the preset coming today.

Guido

btw..is Dan Worley still around? I learned a lot from reading his posts.

Ok, but why would you need to translate HUI to mackie control when PT and the d8b both use HUI? Sounds like the OP just needs to implement HUI into his workflow.
