Bank select just stopped working.

Postby studiodaz » Sat Jan 12, 2013 12:52 am

Here is a good start to 2013

My bank select has just stopped working, I fire up the deck yesterday and could no longer change banks with the mixer.

The strange thing is the keyboard and mouse let my change banks and it also lights up the buttons on the mixer showing which bank button has been click from using the keyboard or mouse on screen. After trying to workout what other buttons are not working i found that I can change to the Tape in and the Effects bank by pressing the mute and solo buttons on fader 24. :?:

I have open up the board to see if any cables have come loose and also open the brain/pc end too, but I can't see anything obviously wrong. I have also looked at my Bios setting but they are set correctly.

Is this likely to be hardware or software that is coursing this to happen?

I can not do a search on this forum as it keeps showing blank pages or open up a virus warning.

Very strange indeed. I'd be inclined to re-install the OS when things are mad like that for no reason.

Re installing is going to be fun. I need to find some .... now what are they called ....mmm.. oh year floppy disks.

Looking on the mackie website if has an OS 5.1 upgrade. Do I install that over my current 5.1, or wipe my disk and start from nothing, or do I have to install version 3 first?

thanks Daz

It would be advisable to back up your sessions if that facility is still available to you. All except the startup session. When you reboot, a new default template will be created. You don't need to install OS 3 prior to installing OS 5.1. You will need your authorization code(s), however. You could try re-installing the OS over the top without backing up and you won't lose files but I'm a bit anal in that department and prefer to start with a clean slate which requires a disk format, instructions for which are in the database.

If you haven't jumped in yet, I'd attempt this little routine first.

Peter H and crash often suggest a faulty RAM situation with strangeness like this and that may well be worth investigating as well.

Let us know your progress.

I did a re-install and the problem is still happening.

I didn't think of RAM, I have two sticks in mine so I will try that now.

I am so glad the forum is back again.

I have changed ram around, tried just one in slot 1 and then slot 2, did this with both slicks but still no joy :(

Do you think this could be a Rail Capacitor that could do this as the rest of the desk seems fine?

I have just tried my desk plugged into another base unit at another studio and it is still giving the same problems.

That suggests a loose ribbon connector somewhere inside the board. This isn't a rail cap issue. Time to flip it over, open it up and re-seat the connectors. Particularly the ones attached to the Control Board.
