Light Pipe routing

Postby Saxdaddy » Tue May 28, 2013 5:50 am

I'm shipping my well used d8b to Tukwilla, WA for some long overdue R&R. In the mean time I'm thinking about ways to speed up my work flow. I record my 5 piece band's rehearsals regularly. Typically I will go thru the d8b, out the light pipe and into my Alesis HD 24. That works fine with no issues. The next part is the query. Can I go out the HD24's light pipe(s) and into the light pipe(s) of my DAW. I'm learning Cubase and have a Hammerfall 9652. The end objective is to be able to record to the HD24 and DAW at the same time. Perhaps one or more of you have attempted something similar. Many Thanks!

With a HDSP-9652? All 24 channels at once? I'm assuming OPT-8 cards in the D8B?

24 of these?

...which is about $750 worth of adapters...not to mention the extra money needed for 48 more lightpipe cables and a master clock between the D8B, HDR and RME (I wouldn't even think of attempting this without a master clock). You could also try and find some old zSys Optipatch+ units (which only afford an 8 channel split...and these are $1000+ each).

Shy of throwing money at it....I'd pick the most reliable of the two recording methods (HDR or DAW) and dub the result to the other.

Thanks for the "cable chic" link the splitters could come in handy. Has anybody used them? I am currently recording to the hd24 then dumping via the Alesis Fireport 1394 to my DAW. It works. Just trying to eliminate a step and another bunch of hardware. I may re-think the z sys stuff. I appreciate the reply! :)

Why not ditch the hdr and alesis fireport and get a motu 2408mk3 with pci (if you got a pc tower) to go straight into your daw. Then get d8bridge and data cable to switch between the d8b and bridge when your workin in daw, should work I am doing some Hard Research to make a setup work for me atm. I just need to make the leap to Pc again for bridge. I May build a Hackintosh to get the best of both worlds pc / mac, d8b & bridge. Or just get a Pc Tower and stick with my macbook. Ahhhh Life Technology.

Good thoughts, but my hope was to be able to record to DAW and hd24 at the same time.
