Hi all;

I am baffled with swapping external drives on my HDR.

It appears that I have to shut down and reboot when I swap these drives. I use my HDR as the Master Clock for my d8b so it is currently a pain to swap drives.

I can find nothing in any of the manuals about it, not even in Mr. River's book.

The definitions in the manual for mount/refresh seems to be a refresh of an existing drive. You know, it updates or refreshes the screen when you have made a change and you don't see it.

If I remove a drive and install a different one and engage "Mount/Refresh", my HDR gets "Hung up". It does nothing include work any more. I must shut down and reboot, then everything is fine. I have even tried "Mount/Refresh" before I swap drives and then again after with no different results.

Anyone have any idea what it is I can do to swap drives without having to shut down?

Current software is 1.4, recently installed.

Hi Bruce,
If you can get that thing to allow you to swap drives without shutting down, you let me know. It was one of the first things I complained to Mackie about when I bought my rig. The External drives are not hot swappable according to them.

IDE is generally not hot-swappable, Boyz... that's most likely the reason it was never implemented. You can't even convert the siggys to SATA to do this, because ultimately the motherboard is IDE-controlled for drive access thru the BIOS...

That really sux for your workflow due to the fact this ain't gonna happen, Bruce...

I get the Refresh, but what is the Mount used for?

Per the HDR Technical Reference Manual :

Mount/Refresh Drives
"The Mount/Refresh drive command updates the HDR24/96 Project file lists to reflect the current status of both the internal and external drives. Use this command to mount a new Mackie Media PROJECT Disk, or to view the size of the files in a Project file list."

So, yeah the refresh is pretty self-explanatory, Bruce... the 'Mount' part of executing the function is specific to a 'Mackie Media PROJECT Disk', which to my understanding is a disk used specifically for BACKUP purposes, NOT recording - something about these IDE drives not being fast enuff with the UDMA type (ATA-100) involved. Might wanna get someone here to clarify that definition. So... that all being said, where it might lead someone to think the unit supports a form of hot-swap when that is certainly NOT the case with these older pieces of hardware that are IDE-based. I'm still hacking around with the Compact Flash drive stuff and this appears to be a big, if not Show-Stopping, issue regarding cards bigger than 8GB as well - True IDE mode and some other things. But that's another upcoming post for another day n time...

Hopefully this is helpful in clearing up some of the "what's involved" in upgrading disks and what works and what doesn't...
