I made these adjustments.
I went to the set up menu and went to midi and changed the MIDI ID to 2 on the 1-8, 9-16 and 17-24 in the digital i/o fields
The HD24 says it's MIDI ID is 2
Still no automation.
There is something in the HD24 owners manual that states verbatim
THE HD24 CANNOT BE A SLAVE TO MIDI TIME CODE WITH THE BUILT IN MIDI CONNECTIONS. IT CAN ONLY BE THE TIME CODE MASTER. HOWEVER YOU CAN PURCHASE A SYNCHRONIZER SUCH AS THE MOTU DIGITAL TIMEPIECE THAT WILL CONVERT THE MIDI TIME CODE INTERNAL TO THE COMPUTER INTO ADAT SYNC.

The HD24 manual also has a block paragraph that states (verbatim)
YOU CAN CONTROL THE HD24 FROM A MIDI SEQUENCER USING MIDI MACHINE CONTROL WHICH SENDS IT COMMANDS (REW, PLAY,STOP, ETC) BUT ONCE THE COMMAND IS RECEIVED THE SEQUENCER SLAVES TO THE MTC GENERATED BY THE HD24

I do appreciate all the great help you folks have been.
