Getting the D8B to automate with Pro Tools

Postby AustinFa04 » Wed Jul 06, 2016 9:02 pm

So here is what I am trying to do...

I prefer to mix on the board rather then in the box, and I know that I can go spen $300? on a Probox, and use the D8B as a controller for Pro Tools, however I am not really interested in that, because my plan is to use the D8B to write the automation then have Pro Tools and the D8B synced via MTC so that the D8B follows Pro Tools and runs the automation at the same time.

I have set up the board in this fashion...

3 DIO-8 cards going out to a Profire 2626, and a MOTU 828 Mk II for a total of 24 I/O's
I run each track out to it's own discrete out (exe In 1 - out 1, in 2 - out 2 ect)
Midi in and out connected to my Profire 2626 communicating with Pro Tools (no problems there, everything works)

Open Project on Pro Tools, then open corresponding automation project on D8B, hit play... no automation??
I know the transports are synced, because I can controle the transport of Pro Tools with the D8B, so what am I doing wrong?

Hi Austin;

Check and make sure the BIOS in the d8b is correct. One of the setting (sorry I can not recall which one), has to do with MIDI. If it is not set correctly then there is no MIDI and no Automation.

Change the BIOS battery (CR3032) if you haven't done that recently.

Also check in the Setup of the d8b and make sure the d8b is generating MTC (it might be MMC) and not SMPTE.

Post back with progress when you can.

Cheers

My memory is really fuzzy on this but it seems that one of the IRQ settings dealt with this...like IRQ 10 or IRQ 7...

That would be correct... IRQ10. It's set (should be!) to 'ISA Legacy', all the others set to 'PCI/ISA Plug n Play'. That hardware IRQ is required to be mapped as such for MIDI communications. You'll notice the MIDI interface card sits in the last slot of the CPU - the lonely old ISA slot... :) :geek:

Of course, you knew it was coming {yadda yadda yadda} :

The battery is 2032 and I don't believe the d8b can control Pro Tools unless it's in HUI mode.

I hate it when I get the MSB wrong! Darn.

Thanks for the correction Peter.

Don't sweat it Bruce. I've made many mistakes. They're what make us human. :)

Hi Peter

If that's true. Then I got to be the most human person on earth because only a dumb person
would try to plug the big friggon cable in with the d8b on as I did. And I can.t get it out of my head about how
dumb that was of me I hope soon I will be back up and running. Peter are you still using your d8b.or did you go
another rout Just asking

Thanks for all the replies everyone, sorry it took me so long to respond, life kicked into high gear and everything extra curricular took a back seat. I will go through and try out the responses you all gave and get back to you. Thanks again.
