Hey Phil;

Hard to say. It would depend on the temperature inside and the type of metal things are made of and how many times things have been cleaned and plugged /n-plugged.

As we clean things we also remove the coating that is on the metal to help stop oxidation and provide good contact. As the coating is worn away from cleaning and repeated plugging / un-plugging, oxidation, with heat as a catalyst, happen quicker.

Just more thoughs.

It's done it again, ok for two hours Sat, two hours Sunday and one hour yesterday, then vu's frozen, a reboot gave a blank LED screen, a BFD reseat corrected this but I couldn't lock the clock. There's a shelf quite low over the desk vents, been ok for fifteen years but I've moved the desk out for more ventilation.

I know that if I do a total reseat again everything will be ok...for a while but I need a proper fix as I'm getting fed up of doing this all of the time

Up and running again, this time I glued down four power connectors, I also found some 40 year old silicon contact liquid, this was added to the connectors and the BFC, just waiting to see what happens now.

what connectors you talking about guys?
I dismantled all D8B took all boards out checked connectors they sit tight
checked boards etc putted all back and same story
Starts works fine for hours and hours until restarted
after restart wont start just clicking noise klick klick with flashing lights on desk
when cooled down starts and works again
I asked repair centre in Surrey how much they would charge they asked for £1500+
Also what silicone you using and on which connectors?
Any suggestions where to start again?

The connectors might be tight but they should be pulled off, cleaned with isopropane and reseated, these are the black ones and the clear plastic power ones,

I kept having to do this every few days until I put a small amount of UHU on the power connectors, fingers crossed everything is ok now.

As a last resort, check out Cimple Solutions London, they have repaired stuff for me including d8b/HDR but that was before I found out some tricks on how to fix things myself.....about eighteen years ago !!!

How do you clean cable connectiors?

From a computer hardware standpoint, that sounds awfully like the hard drive click of death when a hard drive is nearing failure. After it boots from disk, I'm guessing it runs fine since most everything runs off of memory. If I were you, I'd clone that drive and replace it immediately before it fails altogether.
