CF card as external drive

Hi All,
I was just wondering if anyone had successfully used a CF card in the external drive caddy. By successfully I mean that you have been able to use it to record to and not just for back up.

I believe phantomrage has done this with CF cards. I have done it utilizing SD cards.

Thanks for the info. What adapter did you use for the SD card? What brand and speed of SD card did you use?

I don't remember what SD reader I used. It had a metal front plate and I modified an RH-58 Mackie (Lian Li) tray to accept the reader. Got a double male IDE adaptor stuck it on an 80 wire ribbon, plugged the molex connectors together and voila! I tried a few SD cards which weren't fast enough, but found that Sandisk Extreme Pro 95 MB/s would do the trick. My HDR has the chip for large drives so I use 32GB SD cards. Formatted with v1.4 just like you would with a normal IDE drive. Not hot-swappable !!

Sorry, I'm late to the game. There is a board on ebay and other places that mimic a HD, and the bios sees it as a true HD. From what I found high quality and speed SD cards work with all 24 channels in recording and playback.

This is the type of card I have found to work best with older gear that uses IDE, from samplers, to mackie, to computers.

Hi all,
I found an adapter similar to the one in Phantomrage's post but for a CF to IDE with master/slave switch, but I have not been able to verify a CF card for recording. Thinking it might be the quality of the card, I bought a Lexar 1066X
UDMA-7 extreme. Still, no dice. Must be the interface, but I don't understand why the interface for an SD card would be any better. At any rate, I haven't lost anything as I will install the flash card out the back of my masterlink so that when the disk gets full, I can just swap it out without opening up the unit or trying to figure out what to delete.

I think because the CF board as just that. A pcb with very minimal interface with the card and in hopes the system seems to see it as a hard drive. Were the board I found acts as a true hard drive and uses the SD only as the storage medium like a hard drive uses the platters.

Tho I could be way off on this.

I think you are correct. I will try to find a board that has a little more circuitry on it and see if that helps.
