Actually, the cpu unit IS a computer - although it's quite old. You could even install windows 98 on it.
If you want to check whether it works, you could try to install a lightweight linux distribution like "puppy linux" on it, to see whether it would boot.

MackieOS is the operating system - it's not software that runs on another OS. It is likely built on an earlier version of windows, but it has been cut down to the bare minimum and edited to fit their needs.
This is aggrevating for most of us, since this means that we can't update the hardware to modern available devices.

You managed to install linux, and it ran fine? If so, it means the hardware is probably fine.

In order to help you, you need to be very specific about where things go wrong.
Can you boot from the install floppy disk?
Do you have a computer screen connected to the CPU unit?
Try to boot from the install floppy, and write down in detail what you do, and what messages the system gives you back.
