CPU/PSU issue? I think.

Postby scottosterloh » Tue Nov 19, 2019 6:49 am

My D8B was working as a control surface via Probox just fine for awhile. The monitor shows it booting up as it should, but now only the red rude solo light comes on (usually) but that's it. The MTC does not light up so not sure what the issue is. Any ideas? Could something have moved in the psu when I moved it? Should I clean the contacts on the D8B? If so how? Not really sure what I'm going to be looking for when I open the cpu/psu up. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried reseating the BFC (the big connector) ?

Yes I just did that and it just did the same. It acted like it was going to start then nothing. The d8b is getting some power because the rude solo light is on in the solo/studio section on the console.

It could be a few power issues, I would first try reseating the ribbon connectors in your d8b, so, take the lid off pull one connector at a time and reseat, better though if you clean with IPA first.

How do I clean with IPA? So you think it could be an internal issue in the console, correct? Thanks Here's a video of what it does:

It could be anything power related but first do what I suggested, when you have a connector off, clean the male and female connectors with an artists paint brush dipped in IPA.

If there's no change after this, check the fuses in the cpu they're with the transformers under a screwed down top.

So, if I understand your situation right, your D8B was NOT working as a mixer, but only together with the ProBox as a control surface, right (there's a separate ProBox forum for this sort of stuff, btw.)?

If so, does the "Error 43" message eventually come up when you wait long enough (a few minutes)?

If that's a yes to all of that, then I think either the ProBox isn't recognized by the computer or the ProBox doesn't connect with the D8B.

What happens when using a D8B with a ProBox, is that after powering on, and when the D8B console "looks" for the D8B-CPU/Computer, a connected ProBox will respond as the D8B expects and load the firmware into it (I think), that allows it to boot without a D8B-CPU being in an operational state (other than supplying power).

So, if that D8B-Console/ProBox handshake doesn't happen, the D8B will show the "Rude Solo" light, and then eventually give the "Error 43" in the display.

If that's the situation, first check that the ProBox MIDI ports actually show up on your computer and in your DAW. If not, then there's a USB connection problem to the ProBox. If USB is connected, but its MIDI ports aren't found, check if you can see the LEDs inside the ProBox blinking (e.g. if it's dark enough, you can see them shine through the yellow plastic).

If USB is connected and the MIDI ports are found by your DAW-Computer, then the D8B doesn't find the ProBox. So, check the DB25 connection between the ProBox and the D8B. Maybe re-seat it. Maybe try cleaning the connectors a bit, etc. Check if the cable looks damaged, etc.

I'd try that first, before I take apart the console.

...that is, unless you never even get the Error 43 on the D8B's display. Then the D8B console gets stuck somewhere before it can even throw that error. So, does the Rude Solo light stay on "forever", or does the Error 43 message come on, eventually?

The Probox is recognized by the pc. It has power. I've run the trouble shooting option for the MCU port and it always checks out fine. That's why I think it may be something internal in the psu and or the d8b.

It worked for awhile then sporadically. Now not at all. The pp cable is not damaged. Thanks for the help by the way.
