Is a Compact Flash Card in a RH58 Media Tray Possible?

Postby Steam Radio » Fri Jan 17, 2020 8:31 am

Ive spent the last two days trawling through the forum and data base for some more info on the possibility of mounting one of these fast compact flash cards

into this tray

Has anyone had any success in mounting it and getting it to work?,

I know someone in the USA was selling this system back a few years ago....

I know there is great success in using CF cards and installing the operating system into the HDR and the DBB but is it viable or worth it to convert the RH58 from hard drive to compact flash use/
Thanks in advance.

Funnily enough I bought three rather good condition used RH58 media trays with small double fans already built in with 30gb Maxtor hard drives in from eBay this past week for £35 each from the same seller and two years ago I bought a batch of 6 completely unused unopened boxed ones from Thomann when they were selling them off cheap for about £25 a piece so I got lucky there.
I'm hoping that either I get some old 30gb drives or a link to a thread with a mod on how to mount some Compact Flash cards into them.

Don't put the CF card adapter inside the removable hd tray.
Something about that connection isn't working well, and the reading/writing speed isn't fast enough for recording.
You want to connect an ide-cf adapter directly to the motherboard.
However, most of the ide-cf adapters I've seen are like the last image you posted - they allow you to change the card (while the machine is off), so it's easy to do backups of the card, and even have several cards with the OS installed on.

Many thanks for your reply Arjepsen, i guess your meaning is that CF cards mounted on the back are ok for the operating system like in this photo >>>

But for cards used for recording you have to have the card connected to the motherboard and bypassing the media tray using a card adapter like this in this picture is that correct ?

The adapter in your first picture does attach to the motherboard. Don't use the usb cable shown - instead use the data cable that would otherwise connect to your harddisk.
This is the adapter I use.

As mentioned in another thread - it's possible to get an upgraded bios chip, that will let you use up to 128gb cards.
Me and other people here have used 128gb CF cards with the HDR. (the golden labeled sandisk extreme).
There is a guy in here (is it funk?) that has made bios chips for others before.
