Mixing Sessions on a D8B from a HDR24/96

Postby Malfeitor » Tue Feb 11, 2020 4:10 am

Greetings - I am missing something here. I'm sure it's my ignorance. Have a great working D8B hooked to a HDR24/96 that I just replaced the MB in and is fully functional. Fr those in the HDR thread about my recorder, I had to replace the MB. New BIOS flash/chip and recapping the entire board and still wouldn't get past the 43 comm error.

I have hard drives with old sessions tracked on the HDR but do not have the mix sessions for the D8B. I am trying to setup mixes of the old sessions on the D8B to ultimately send out to my computer I/O and Nuendo.

Problem: (besides the connection between the chair and the D8B) I cannot get the signal path to feed back into the D8B to monitor/mix it. When I play it from the D8B the HDR rolls through the tracks like intended and the meterbridges indicate activity on the HDR. But not the D8B.
- What am I missing for setting up for this scenario?
- I know the DIO-8s are good because I have already fed the raw tracks to my computer from some sessions and read them into Nuendo no prob.
- Do I have to know whether the data was tracked at 44.1 or 48k to get it to output into the D8B.

Setup:
- D8B is hooked to the HDR via ADAT, OPT8's in the D8B - DIO8's in the HDR seet to ADAT. Both are v2 firmware.
- D8B controls the HDR as intended via MIDI
- Both units lock WC at 48k to a Lucid GENx6 WC

Thanks in advance and peace

Go into the setup drop down on the HDR and verify that you ADAT selected and not TDIF, for the output on your DIO8 cards. I would start there. Even if you have the sample rate wrong, it should play but it will play at the wrong speed, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for reply. All 6 (I/O for all 3) are set to ADAT. I honestly think I might be missing some fundamental knowledge on the D8B routings using a blank session. Do I need to set up busses or AUXes to get the signal in the chain? In the Digital I/O setup on the D8B, shows all OPT-8', all UV22 is off and the Input and Output boxes are empty.

Again, thanks for help. It's probably me

Hi,
I don't know how familiar you are with the D8B, so please don't be offended by my question. Do you have the D8B set to the tape return layer when looking for the audio from the HDR?

Have a blessed day,
Mike W.

Not offended at all Mike. Not too familiar with it. Recorded through one many times over the years but never set one up or engineered through it.

If I understand your question clearly, I have the 25-48 Tape In (MONITOR) button selected.

Thanks for replying Mike

OK, how about your lightpipes? Are you sure you are in to out and out to in? I have screwed this up before on occasion. If it is all hooked up right, you should be able to hit play, go to the tape return side and see some meter activity. Raise a fader and enjoy.

For fun, you can go in and throw away your "startup" file, in case it is corrupt of some such nonsense. When you reboot, the console will create a new one, so no worries there. The Bus and auxes are ways out of the console, so no need to worry about that since you are trying to get back in.

Have you attempted to hook up a mic and just see what happens there by chance? Has the console made noise anywhere? Do you by chance see an alternating */? in the right corner of the VFD on the console? Just trying hash out clocking.

Thanks for reply - No */? in the VFD. The HDR isn't flashing the clock indicator either. Solid red so I think I'm locked on the WC. I even removed my Lucid from the system to debug. Must be the OPT-8 cards or something amiss in the console blocking the OPT-8 input. I know the DIO-8s work in the HDR because I have output to computer with them previously. All cards light up red on the lightpipe outputs. Verified the fiber routing for the eleventy-seventh time. Stumped. Wonder if there is some type of I/O fuse or protection circuit (or something failed) locking out the OPT-8s in the console. Also tried to record to the HDR through the mic and no signal going out of the console via ADAT either. Can someone post a pic of their Digital I/O page in setup? All my boxes under Input and Output are empty. Not sure it's supposed to be that way... (Update: These boxes are for the DIO-8 cards when you switch from ADAT to TDIF etc. Blank for the OPT-8 cards. Swapped the cards in the console and HDR to test)

The VFD reports the 3 OPT8s and the ALT PDI-8 when it boots up.

I hooked up a mic to the console and works like a charm.

The boxes are blank for the OPT.8 because there are no options to change to anything other than ADAT. If you are saying that you can't select with the DIO.8, than that is weird. There are 3 fuses in the CPU but those are the only ones. They might be worth checking to see if there is something at odds there, but I am guessing not. I would send you a pic but I have recently retired my d8b after many years of reliable service.

I am assuming that you have the HDR set to output ADAT, given that the DIO8 cards are in there. It might be worth pulling all the cards and start with one card in the d8b and one in the HDR and keep adding to see if one is causing issues. That could be a possibility.

Went inside after reading the database regarding anomalous behavior and it pointed to some possible internal connections. I flipped it over and went inside. Schematics say indicate J18,19,20 >> J47 & J20 >> J48 are the ribbons for the TAPE I/O to the DSP. Since I had it flipped and was up its skirt, I decided to pull every connector, treat with Stabilant and reseat multiple times. Also treated the card cage ISA sockets and I/O cards. Still no TAPE I/O. Eliminated that variable anyways ( I hope)

Then read Crash's post.

I was wondering why the boxes were empty for the OPT-8 cards in the D8B last night and figured out what your saying after installing the DIOs in the D8B, DIO has the Tascam opts

Pulled all the I/O cards, added one DIO to the D8B and one to the HDR. (cards are v2.1 firmware) - No TAPE I/O
Pulled all the I/O cards, added one OPT-8 to the D8B and one to the HDR. - No TAPE I/O

Stumped. Guess I'll try different lightpipe cables. Crazy because this console is like new inside and out. Doesn't even have a single scratch or printing wear. I know age is the issue here, just figure since it was probably rarely used/heat cycled it wouldn't have much issue. Works perfect as a Nuendo/Cubase controller when I rig for it (Thanks Ralph)

Keeping at it.

Thanks for help all. Be well. Peace

Did you do the same slot every time for your testing? Look in the I/O light pipe receptacles on your I/O cards and see if you see any red light coming back your direction. Check both d8b and HDR.
