Having built my fair share of these units, I can tell you that what you want to do won't be fun. The meter bridge is one of the first steps in building one of these consoles, so you have to go pretty deep to get to the VFD. I am not sure it is something that can be described over a forum post. You have to tear the console down pretty far and disconnect a mess of cabling and basically remove the ass end of the console to get to where the VFD lives. These may help you.
