D8B Desk For Sale

Postby D8BNOOB » Fri Aug 30, 2024 10:10 am

Hello, I am looking for a desk built for the D8B. I have seen some previous listings on Reverb that show a KK Audio Desk custom for the D8B. Does anyone know where I can purchase something like this?

You might have seen that post, already, but a few years back I bought a used "Argosy Series 90" for my D8B.

I added some new pics and a description of what changes I made to the setup, that make it work better for me, now:

https://d8bforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2209

There used to be a few companies that made studio furniture, specifically for the D8B. I'm aware of at least Argosy and Omniraxx. (Not sure if KK Audio made one... did they exist, when the D8B was new? I don't recall hearing that name that far back).

For those brands that DID make custom desks for the D8B, there were usually variations for different mixer models available... so, most of these desks support multiple "similar footprint" mixing desks, but some important details may be different, that make them only work with that particular one).

So, my Argosy Series 90 desk, for example, was also available for the Avid/Digidesign C24, and the "mainframe" for the desk is apparently the same. But the "inserts" for the rack units, etc. would have different angles to match the angles on the mixing desk, for different models... so, technically, only a D8B desk "should" fit a D8B nicely.

The previous owner of my Argosy desk advertised the one I bought as "for Avid C24" - probably because he thought he'd have a better chance to sell the Argosy desk better of for more money that way (while essentially screwing over the new owner, since it wouldn't work out nicely for a C24).
That's because the C24 is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more common than the D8B... and there are lots of them still in use in serious studios nowadays, since they're pretty reliable (as opposed to the D8B). So, finding a C24 owner as a buyer should "in theory" have been much easier, than finding a D8B owner who's still "upgrading" the furniture for it.

Anyway... I bought the desk, thinking I might be able to mod it to at least have it look "nice enough" - when it turned out that this was actually the D8B specific version, that I bought. Oh, lucky me! (Seriously!!)

I found out when I contacted Argosy about some spare parts I needed, and they told me about the numbers printed on the back of the rack inserts, that let them identify what mixing desk that piece of furniture was created for (more details in the post I'm linking to).

So, I'm expecting that you'd have to look out for similar "details" for other studio furniture manufacturers, who put out such desks for different mixer models.

Other than literally having a one-off custom desk made by a local carpenter, I don't think it's possible to buy any such studio furniture for the D8B "new" anymore. So, if it needs to fit the D8B like a glove and look the best it can I think you'll have to look at the used marked (or talk to a local carpenter).

There are some "generic" studio furniture options available, that just have rack space on the left and right (or similar) with a relatively generic platform in the middle that you could put the D8B on... but if it's from a brand such as Argosy, those desks costs THOUSANDS!!!! So, that stands in no proportion to what the D8B itself is worth, nowadays.

I don't remember... I think I paid around $600 for that Argosy desk (maybe I mentioned in my old post... I didn't re-read)... but I think he accepted a lower offer. So, for a price range like that, finding something used is your only option, IMO.

Does anybody else have more info on furniture for the D8B that WAS available at some point? So, Argosy, OmniRaxx... who else? Did KK Audio make anything like that? Were there any other brands, models?
