Converting a D8B to a full fledged DAW Controller (w/o MIDI)

Discussion board for Mackie's d8b Digital Console users.

Can I make a special wired cable that take both serial ports out from the Console Data connector and send one to the original CPU and the other to the usb cable on the DAW?

1) Will Mackie's OS start up completely and open up the default session with only half Console Data cable connected?

2) Could you set up the default session from the d8b monitor using the mouse?

My point is that I should be able to set up a static session with all my audio routing needs (surround setup here) and have the surface control software running at the same time.

Fingers crossed.

Phoenix, since it symbolizes immortality.

Peter that may not be possible, as their software is loading the firmware to the board on startup (remember marc said something about having to hack the firmware to fix some bugs). This might cause problems with loading from the CPU and the "DAW8B" at the same time.

Anything's possible. It's not an 8b anyway anymore. After all, anyhorizon!!! :)

I'm with you on that, would be nice, and I'm in full agreement that the primary focus right now is simply a working control surface. But I would LOVE to have the best of both without resorting to 3 external 8 channel pre's. Having never used an MCU before, I've never had the experience to see how it is recognised and configured. So I am very curious to see how it works. Almost all major DAW softwares can or will recognise the Mackie protocol or hardware, so I am drooling at the thought of getting to use this in Sonar X1 and Pro Tools. My primary curiousity at this point has to do with the 3 MCU config and how/what config is done within the DAW. Will there be a basic "template" to start with in the modified software that pre-maps everything or will the 3MCU's be editable/mapable within the DAW? How much customization will there be to tailor the board's controls to your preferences, and will those customizations have to come from the DAW side, or within the control surface software itself? The bankable faders as seen in the latest video are just a killer feature, and I can't wait to see what other neat things this will allow me to do within my DAW.

I just cant wait to get my hands on this and bring this D8B back to life!
