5.1 Upgrade

Postby Blastin » Thu Sep 22, 2011 1:54 am

I think I need a little assistance on installing 5.1, I download and open files and extract them, I double click on floppy icon, WinImage appears, I check write, extract, create image, the first disk has files on it, possibly 4?, disk 2 has image, green icon, with 1400 Kb, disk 3, also has green image, 7-800 Kb. I insert disk 1, then power up CPU unit, NOTHING HAPPENS. Could it be the floppy drive, is bad, the light does not come on, nor any sound of movement.

All three need to be the green looking image file - three files - three disks. Here is the way to do it.

I don't know if you are on a Mac or a Windows machine so here is the main page - it is a little tricky but just follow the details. I will repeat... follow the details!

http://www.mackie.com/products/d8b_v5/downloads.html

Also don't forget to install Service Pack 3. In the database there is information too, especially about formatting the hard drive for a "fresh install" when you back up your files and have them stored safely the format will erase all the data on the hard drive. FWIW, version 5.1 has a function that adjusts the EQ so your v3.0 files "sound" right on the new v5.1. Congratulations on v5.1 it is a very good thing. For me, there is no comparing v3.0 to 5.1 worlds apart and a very good choice.

High C, I inserted disk 1 into floppy and it reads as follows: Folder, Disk 1, Image 700KB, Install, 1KB, MackieOS, 448KB, PME.SYS, 56KB, also, checked floppy looks ok, installed 2, 128MB RAM, still nothing when I power up CPU. And service pack three, install that first, then recreate floppies, 1-3? Also, I'm using Vista 32bit, on my computer, still install service pack 3?

Is the BIOS set up to read the floppy drive first upon boot up? If it is, your floppy will try and read eveytime you boot the console. (Short noise, green light) When it doesn't see anything there it goes to the next device which is the hard drive. Just something to check. It is possible to have a bad floppy drive. I have replaced mine once before...

Hi Blastin,

This is listed in the order it shows up on the floppy.

In the folder labeled system are two folders labeled firmware and Prefs and the tools.ini notepad (this is where you can choose to format the drive by typing format:on on the bottom line.
In the Firmware folder there is a BIN file labeled control.asc (58KB).
The Prefs folder is empty. This is all that is in the folder labeled System

Next to that there is another BIN file labeled disk1.img (700 KB)

Next to that there is another notepad, if you open it is says "Do not modify this file or the installer will not work." and a bunch of other stuff.

Next to that there is a .EXE file labeled MACKIEOS.EXE

And last is another BIN file labeled PME.SYS (56Kb)

Crash has a good point to check the bios and to listen to the drive and see the activity light to make sure the drive is spinning. Not a big fan of Vista, but that should not stop you from copying the files onto the floppy correctly. I can not stress enough the importance of reading the instructions on the Mackie site, especially this one... 7) Be sure that both "Writing on Floppy" and "Formatting" are checked and click on the "OK" button in the upper right corner of the dialog box.

Service pack 3 is a separate thing, I don't think it matters what order but I would install it after v5.1 is successfully installed. That is another three disks and similar to install as the v5.1.

Hope this helps,
Michael

I was able to install 5.0, I'll try this for a few days to see how it works, should I have used 5.1?

I don't even remember a place where you can download v5.0... oh well. Seems silly to have 5.0 as a download really.

Sorry Frank! I just wasn't looking I guess. Still seems silly to me, but my guess is that it was a release so it is available to download, just as v3.0 and earlier versions are still able to be downloaded.

Well I am NOT going to beat myself up about it! Let it go... let it go..... let it go.... Okay I feel better.

Peace,
Michael
