Preamp Bypass

Can anyone remember the preamp bypass wireing, I seem to remember it as red to ring and black to sleeve?

Ok, this was discussed on the other forum a few years back.

Using an outside preamp and going from there to the D8b inserts I believe that jack wiring can bypass the D8b's preamps, a wireing diagram was posted but I can't find it.

OK, now that makes more sense now that you have explained it to me. I always use the ALT I/O slot for such things, though this route seems interesting.

The return signal goes to the ring. The send goes to the tip.

Just remember that the input side of the insert socket will be -10db.

Check carefully that the external mic pre is not sending +4db from its output ---- +4db into -10db simply just doesn't go --- you could easily blow up the d8B's input section.

If the mic pre is sending a mic level signal (about -50 to -60db) then the insert section will not have enough gain to get any usable signal.

I would suggest going Crash's way, or using one of the d8B's Line inputs.

Blowing the D8b's input section does'nt appeal to me, i've had enough problems in the past but fingers crossed things have settled down now.

At the moment I am using a Focusrite ISA430 and from there into the D8'b's line in and with it's gain off, but i've just done a comparison recording. The sound doing it this way has a lot more top to it than recording straight into the D8b's line in, probably due to two pre amps being used.

Have you tried the ALT I/O slot? It looks like the purest straightest path in when compared to a channel. I would be curious to hear if you detect any loss of high end (or more top end depending on your point of view) with this path.

I don't recall that being the case. The send and return are unbalanced but the level is still nominally +4dB.
