Just remember that the input side of the insert socket will be -10db.
Check carefully that the external mic pre is not sending +4db from its output ---- +4db into -10db simply just doesn't go --- you could easily blow up the d8B's input section.
If the mic pre is sending a mic level signal (about -50 to -60db) then the insert section will not have enough gain to get any usable signal.
I would suggest going Crash's way, or using one of the d8B's Line inputs.

I don't recall that being the case. The send and return are unbalanced but the level is still nominally +4dB.

Yes Peter, and this is what the line drawings confirm in the manual... I question the -10 too as it would actually be more trouble to pad this input rather than wire it straight through.
And yes Phil the trim amp is between the line input and the insert input... this is what I see anyway (again on the line drawings in the manual), so aside from losing the balanced signal, the insert input is the same pathway except it is after the line amp (trim) and the line input is before the line amp (trim).
The drawing is on pg. 20 in the .pdf version and pg 14 in the hard paper version (both chapter one) labeled d8b block diagram, marked as figure 1-6.
Hope this helps (and I hope I didn't screw this one up too! )
