Headphone Mix

Postby StudioQ » Mon Mar 26, 2012 2:06 am

I am a "Board Newbie" with a basic question. How do I set up separate mixes for headphones ?
Thank you for your help

How many mixes do you want? It is all about the aux sends...

I use aux's 9&10 and 11&12 for two stereo HP mixes. Useful to have the pan feature but not always needed.

I usually build a mix on faders than use the "copy mix to cue" function and then tweak further based on what the musos ask for.

Thanks for the replies. I am sorry if the following is belaboring the obvious but I tested as follows:
Guitar Track 1
Bass Track 2

In the Headphones/Cue mix 2 section I got the following-
With guitar and bass up and control room button lit I hear the same in the phones as the speakers.
With guitar up and bass down I pressed 'Copy to cue' and selected 'Cue 1' from the display
With bass up and guitar down I pressed 'Copy to cue' and selected 'Cue 2' from the display.
In the headphones I could hear the guitar only by pressing 'Aux 9-10' (in the Headphones/Cue mix 2 section)
In the headphones I could hear the bass only by pressing 'Aux 11-12' ( " )

Is that the usual way or is there a alternate method. I was a little puzzled by the flow chart in the manual which showed
Cue mix 1 and headphones 1 together and similar for 2.

I am wondering if anybody knows of a practical user guide or videos showing use of the d8b in common studio situations.
The manual does not seem to be geared in that direction.

Again many thanks.

Selecting control room will mirror what you hear in the control room. It looks like you are heading in the right direction. Think of the aux 9&10, aux 11&12 as a select button in the sense that you could have headphones 1 and 2 both monitor aux 9&10 or 11&12 if you wanted. Typically the way Casey runs his is pretty normal.

I find the manual to be pretty straight forward. Are you looking for something specific on operations?

I think what I would benefit from is a hands on hour or two with someone who is comfortable enough to go over the basics of the board, particularly routing, busses, aux etc.
Even though I have had the board a long time and use it I am basically self taught and would probably learn more in a session with someone more experienced than I can from the manual.
I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks again

As Crash mentioned, use your 9/10 & 11/12 aux in other words just use them as faders to get the right headphone mix.
