Recommended Memory for D8B v5.1

Postby Dreamsequence » Sun Aug 05, 2012 5:40 am

Gents:

My 'monster' dual D8B / dual HDR setup has (1) each 166Mhz and (1) 300 Mhz CPU. The HDRs are upgraded to HDR v1.3 Brain EPROMS, Large HD BIOS EPROMS, and OS 1.4. I'm plugging in 256M RAM DIMMs, so I think that's the limit on expanding those. For the D8Bs, they are set up identically with (3) OPT-8s for HDR I/O, (1) OPT-8 for ALT I/O (to bus between consoles), Apogee WC cards, (2) MFX and (2) UFX cards per console.

Here's the actual question (drum roll, please): how much memory should I have in the D8B CPUs to have enough horsepower? I read that v5.1 will require SP3, and I plan to unlock ALL the plugins. I recall reading that 32M is enough for the CPUs, but I think one thread or technical bulletin said the UFX cards like more RAM so they don't choke. Any consensus out there for the recommended D8B memory config to take full advantage of the UFX plugins?

Thanks, boys. You guys rock! :geek:

Hey there,

The most that the d8b will recognize is 256MB so the consensus is to put in two sticks of 128MB - the type is 100 MHz or faster, 168 pin, DIMM SDRAM, backwards compatible, non-ECC.

Hope this helps -

Michael:

Will the D8B recognize (1) 256MB PC-100 compatible DIMM, or are the (2) 128's preferred?

Thanks!

Hi,

It will recognize one stick (or two) of 256MB - only 256MB will be recognized even if you have 512MB in both slots.

FWIW, I have put one stick 256MB stick in and it works. Mackie recommends the two of 128MB, I have also put two 256MB sticks in and it still only recognized the 256MB - I really don't know how it works, I am not really a computer guy, I just know what I have done. If you can get two 128MB compatible RAM you can not go wrong provided the RAM is good.

Hope this helps,

Michael

Probably the address bus is only wide enough for 256MB...

Thanks Michael.

You are welcome, let me know how it works out --- of course with the two d8b's you will need to times it by two.

I've actually got an almost identicle setup at least as far as the D8Bs go. Difference being that I'm using Pro Tools 10 for Recording and both consoles for running along side the PT 10 rig for processing and final mixdown. Both D8B CPUs have the newer motherboards and are now, with the direction and suggestions of some great and experienced guys here on the forum fully loaded up with RAM -(2x128MB PC 100 168 Pin Dimms in each CPU). All plugins are firing on all cylinders with V5.1 on both D8Bs, but SP3 is a must I believe. They are now happily riding in tandem with no glitches, they sound great.
I hope it all goes well with your set up. :-)

Pat,

More than happy to pass on what I've already picked up from the wealth of d8b know how here on the forum.

Happy holidays to all :-)
