Second Abbey Road Studio 2 visit with echo chamber pictures

Postby Phil.c » Sat Mar 16, 2013 9:49 am

My second visit to Abbey Road studio 2 for a talk by Brian Kehew and Brian Ryan, writers of Recording the Beatles.

Basically the same talk and setup as last year but this time, they played Sunshine Superman from the original 1" four track tape on one of the original machines, Jimmy Page played electric guitar on this :)

Each track was played seperate and showed that headphones were not used but monitor speakers so there was quite a lot of sound spillage on each track.

The sound was sent into the echo chamber via a speaker and picked up by a mic capturing the echo, this was played back to us and then mixed to the original tracks.

The mic can be seen on one of the picture and is to the left of me.

The public are not normaly allowed into the Echo Chamber but I felt quite privileged when Brian invited me in for a look-see.

The room was built as an add on and no damp-proofing was used, consequenstly part of the floor was damp and on occasions the room could not be used. A heater was added (to the right of me) to try to dry the place out.

The room was originally L shaped but the leg of the L has been bricked up to cut down on the noise seepage into the studio. The sewer pipes are not the original ones, and the echo sound was similar but not identical to how it was back in the early sixties etc.

Brian explained that the echo was different to a Hall for example which was smooth and flowing, in fact it was more rippleing and the delay was around one and a half seconds.

If there is anything i've forgotten or there are any questions needed answering please let me know.

that few can get in. how lucky can one get. you need to play the lottery.

Phil,

Reminds me of a famous studio in Sydney (Australia) in the late 1950's - 1960's.

To get echo (and I think also reverb), they use to run a couple of lines out of the studio, out the front door of the building and about 100mtrs down the road to where there was a vacant block of land --- it once had a factory building on it that had an underground bomb shelter (built during 2nd World War I think). The building was gone but the shelter remained.

They use to mount an amplifier and speaker at one end and a mic at the other and via a voice signal from the control room into the speaker, the mic was moved by a tech to different locations within the shelter to get the effect required.

For those living in Australia the studio was the original Harris St, Festival studios.
