Thanks Tom,

Great suggestions. I took out the faderboard and cleaned it as best I could per the recommendation on the d8B Database. Everything seems good and tight. I put it back, but will swap it with 1-8 as I might as well clean them all while it's open. My new HD arrived so I have that little hurdle to jump before I will know anything.

Onward and Upward
Appreciate all the wonderful help.

I used to have a sticking fader that fixed itself when I upgraded from OS 3 to OS 5.1. When you get your new HD in, it may resolve itself when you reinstall the OS. Fader swapping is a good idea too.

Regarding the faders now that I have them out can I squirt contact cleaner in the slots? Can they be lubricated with a drop of sewing machine oil in the slots? I don't want to screw anything up:)

Don't put sewing machine oil in the slots whatever you do!!!!!!!!!!!!! Read this. Tread carefully. You don't need lubricant anywhere near the fader track.

Peter,
I followed the maintenance guideline. Everything looked very clean so I just put the miniscule amount of sewing machine oil on the motor shafts by using a paper clip bent just so. No easy task in itself. Thanks for the 'Heads up'

Ok, We may be pushing the fringes of my pay grade here.
I have a replacement hard drive (an exact replacement) . I bought a USB floppy drive and a USB IDE case as recommended in the 10 Golden rules for Hard Drive replacement. I have down loaded DOS 6.22 onto a floppy.
My 'updated' operating system is 3.0 build 224.
I was unable to find the Tools.ini file on the first floppy, therefore unable to type 'Format:On(Rule6)
I connected the new HD to my computer via the IDE case, there are some files on there. To provide a 'raw' disk do I have to reformat? (Rule 3)
Having unsuccessfully completed rules 3 and 6 I hooked up the HD to the Mackie inserted the DOS 6.22 disk and turned it on.
at the end of screen 2 it said 'Remove disk or media, press any key to restart'.
I removed the disk, pressed a key and nothing happened.
Kind of at a loss now.

Throwing all caution to the wind I put the OS disk 1 in the floppy and turned it on again. It got as far as disk 2 then it gave the message 'memory extraction error'.

Thanks,
Peter

Update:
I have tried a 30G IDE HD which was not recognized by the OS. I am getting a couple more from ebay to try. I had a useful conversation with Mackie Tech Support. Two things they said were interesting. 1. The system error 43 message during OS installation can be ignored and to let the Mackie format the HD via the Format:On command in the Tools.ini file on floppy disc 1. I am sure that many contributors to this board who are much more experienced have already been down this road, but I pass it on as it came to me.
Still hopeful to get it back in service, thanks for all the advice.

OMFG BINGO!
I am up and running. I got a WD800BB HD put the jumpers on 3-4 & 5-8 hooked it up and it formatted and reinstalled the software and it gave me a lovely screen. It did not download the MFX package. Is there something else i need to do to get that?
