I will give it a try, waiting for the replacement fader before I do anything.

Also, Just in case you don't know. Properly ground yourself. The smallest bit of static electricity can toast some very important chips.

Bingo! Fader replaced, board reassembled and working. I had never attempted this before and was a little trepidatious, thinking I might somehow render the whole assembly ineffective. I bought two items from Radio Shack to assist.
I found the desoldering bulb to be far more effective than the desoldering braid. I worked carefully and it all went surpisingly smoothly, much to my relief. I took no special precautions regarding grounding as I had not checked the forum before proceeding, but everything is OK as far as I can tell.

Many thanks for all the help.

Congratulations, I've been putting off doing this to one of my fader boards but I need to get it done cause it's getting ridiculous.

Good to hear you got it fixed. If you did zap it with ESD, it won't fail right away necessarily. When these were built, there were grounding straps at every station of assembly as well as mats on the floor to isolate you from the ground while building a d8b. That is how serious we were about grounding while building. I wouldn't worry about it at this point and ride it while it lasts. Heck, something else may go way before you experience anything here, or you may never never have any issue due to ESD. In any case, you fixed it once... you could fix it again if need be.

For what it is worth I'm pretty sure I was wearing rubber soled sneakers. I don't know how many points that will get me.

Way kewl, fixing that slide pot... I got #17 acting up, it's OK during the calibration routine but is just incorrigible under any other circumstance. I sourced the part (good vendor, with a days shipping), this should take all of 30 minutes - with the most of that being a careful dis-assembly and re-assembly after the RnR of the fader pot... ;-)

After that, a new Compact Flash drive next up on the docket, w/ OS 5.1 to be installed... should keep me busy for a few days.. :D
