My chip will need 3 connections: +5V, Gnd, Data. +5V and Gnd can be found in many connectors and can be tapped easily. For the data line it is necessary to cut a trace on the brainboard and solder a wire to a (comparatively large) SMD resistor. Not too difficult for anybody who has a little soldering practice. Not recommended for a newbie, however...

Hi Maxcz
Will you provide a sort of procedure with pictures how to do this? Do we have to dismantle the current Mackie ID Chip in order to make your Chip running? Where is the ID chip situated on the brain board?

Hi Carlo,
As soon as my solution is working and tested I will provide necessary installation instructions. No chips have to be removed, only 1 trace must be cut (data to existing ID chip).
If you want to use this solution, you will have to provide me with any ESN you have a key to, I will program a chip and send it to you. This will cost mostly postage fees (from Austria) as the chip is very inexpensive.
But before we go into details - first let me get it working :-)

Except that my car is broken, I wrecked my girlfriend's car and so have no time for fun things now - no, no news in this matter, I'm afraid... Stay tuned, this can't take forever...

Holy Makeral;

It took me almost 2 hours to read this entire thread, but it was worth it. I cannot thank you enough for all this information. I bought a D8B running 5.1 a year ago and it has worked very well. I bought a console last week on ebay that was a little older but actually newer because it was new in a box. I transferred all my UFX, MFX cards and i/o boards to it and connected it to the CPU/PSU that came with my other console, and I am now living in OZ, (this thread).

I totally agree with the fact that Mackie has there head up there ass with this. I think Peter's comments about the longevity of the D8B is surprising to Mackie, and maybe they should open their eyes to what is going on. THe D8B still is one of the best products out there and now that is is reasonably priced, people are jumping on them. I waited 14 years for one. You would think that with this demand in the market, that Mackie would actually bring back the D8B, but personally, I think they are to stupid to see that. THe truth be told, I would not give you 2 cents for anything Mackie produces today. That is a shame because 15 to 20 years ago the name Mackie stood for quality made and pristine audio. What happened to them is a wonder. I am surprised that no-one has started a class action suit against them. If it is worth note here, when I hooked up another console to the CPU, when the auth screen came up, it had the new ESN number that is on the new Brain Board. SO the authorization code must be being written to the E-PRom during the the process of hitting the enter key and rebooting. I purchased my first D8B from easy, and It was working already when I got it. I had called Mackie to obtain the Auth Codes. I never had to use the auth code for the OS until now.

Please add me to the petition list

So for now, I am going to switch the brain boards in the consoles and hope that works.

Just went to Mackie's web site and was able to click on "Buy Now" to purchase an authorization code for version 5.1. So, how is it that Mackie could legally advertise to sell you something that doe not work. They should be sued for that. It is a open lie! I got the idea while thinking about this that, well, If Mackie is not going to listen or do anything about this then why not get their attention through other media outlets. I for one subscribe to at least 4 periodicals that test and rate products all day long. "Music Tech Magazine", "Computer Music" and "Future Music" just to name a few. Computer Music just did a spread on vintage gear through the years. We should write a letter to the editor of all these periodicals and see if anyone wants to do a story on this. I think that would get their attention and pretty fast.

I would even volunteer to write such a letter. What does everyone think?
