How to clone the HD of the mackie d8b

Hey Carlo,

Getting back to you with a status. I have had no success getting the BIOS on my d8b to recognize the newly cloned SSD boot drive. I can see and navigate the d8b file system when it is mounted to my Win7 x64 machine but I cannot boot from that drive when it is installed in the d8b. The BIOS simply cannot see it. I won't say I've tried everything, but I am completely out of ideas at the moment after about 2 days of earnest attempts. There is seemingly some incompatibility between my BIOS and this SSD. I may consider a different approach. I wish I had better news for you. If I make any headway I'll be sure to let you know.

Is there a way to check the clone image on an IDE instead on an SSD? I know this is not part of your project but my concern is: ~what if one misplaces the codes and the HD goes wrong? At least there is an image somewhere you know.

I totally understand your concern. With no functioning unlock code server running it is a precarious situation for those without the unlock codes. If I can find an old IDE drive lying around I'll check out the drive imaging onto the IDE HDD.

One thing I have not yet tried with my SSD is the d8b disk build procedure using DOS 6.22 floppies. There may be a hybrid approach where I can get the basic disk build done with the floppies and then copy the Mackie OS and project files over from a backup I've made onto a hard disk elsewhere. I'm still not sure I would be able to format the SSD from a DOS floppy but I just haven't checked it out yet.

I snagged a couple of used Maxtor 20 GB drives off of eBay last night for mega cheap. When they arrive I'll try the drive imaging thing and let you know how it goes.

This is a bit more selfish than it might seem. Worst case is I want to be able to have some reliable backup, even if on another hard disk drive. And I'm personally curious to see if this disk imaging approach works with the hard drives.

Just a quick update for you. I got a couple of replacement Maxtor 20 GB drives off of eBay at about $10 each. I succeeded in cloning a replacement drive from a drive image I made from the original d8b. I used the free/trial Macrium Reflect 5.2 software to do it. The original drive image copy took about 13 minutes to transfer the 20 GB image from the original d8b drive to a host computer. It took another 13 minutes to restore that image to one of the new drives. The new drive is now a carbon copy of the original source drive. For the imaging, I attached the drives to the host computer using an inexpensive external USB2-PATA drive adapter. Once finished, I put the newly imaged hard drive in the d8b and it booted and ran perfectly. Everything transferred over just fine. Super easy. Even though I intend to ultimately go with a non-mechanical storage solution this certainly works well as disaster recovery insurance. Please let me know if you have any questions or want more details.

Still trying to get my d8b to boot from an SSD but that's another story...

Thank you for your interest. Yes, trust me, I've read it several times. After many days of frustrating attempts I have finally come to the unhappy conclusion that my Award BIOS 4.51PC will not detect the Transcend 32 GB PATA SSD under any circumstances. My next move will probably be to look into the Compact Flash approach. Thanks!
