Fanless Power Supply d8b

Hi All

As I build a fanless Power Supply for my d8b console (no CPU/noPSU) and several user asked me how I did that I want to make an own Topic here to cover this changes.

My solution is ONLY without CPU as I do not have one.

As I'm very Business with the probox at the Moment please accept that it will take a little time till I respond.

A detailed description will follow, but before I want to raise a call to everybody that owns a d8B CPU/PSU and is a Little familiar with electronics.

My question:
can anybody check, which supplies in the PSU are fanless ?

I'm pretty sure that the 48V and +/-16V Supplies are fanless (If yes, the biggest part is won). These are critical to Audio.

Maybe also the 5V supply for the console (not for the CPU) is also fanless ? If yes, then BINGO. It will be easy to get the d8b fanless if you can skip the CPU and Audio functions and use it only as Controller. In this case you only Need to build in a fanless 12V switching power supply (about 30 Dollars) and you run fanless.

Maybe somebody can check that

I only remember two fans being in there, one being for the processor chip and the one in the sparkle supply. Here is info from the database if it helps.

Power Supplies within the CPU/PSU rack

1. Aztec Supply:

This is the first of two 5V power supplies in the CPU/PSU rack, this one being a switching power supply which provides the D8B with 5VDC, one of many supply voltages required by the board to drive its circuitry. If this supply blows, the console will appear dead although the CPU will boot up. After fully booted up, the monitor will display an error message ("reset").

2. Sparkle Supply:

This is the 5V power supply for the CPU.

3. Linear Power Supply:

A small circuit board dominated by several large capacitors which provides a variety of DC voltages to the D8B console, including +48V (for phantom power), + 12 VDC, and +/- 16 VDC.

If the Sparkle 5V power supply in the CPU rack dies, a replacement is available in the form of a Sparkle Power Supply model SPI-250G.

Maybe somebody can make detailed pictures from the inside
Of the CPU/Psu. Then i can make a description what to do.
You will loose the audio (Mic preamps will work via inserts)
But your d8b controller will be silent.
I think only a fanless 12v supply is needed.

what I'm missing on the Pictures is the part of the 5V console power supply.
and the 230V/110V part of the PSU to check where the Computer PS can be removed.

as far as I remember the plug on Picture POWER SUPPLY SMALL BOARD
that has a 2x2 connector with two yellow and two purple cables are the 12V. I think this cable goes to the console.
the 1x4 connector with red, black,black,yellow cable Comes from the Computer PS. You only Need the yellow (12V) and black (GND) cable to supply with a fanless 12V PS.

What I do not know, where is the 5V supply for the console connected to (110/230V side).
On the Pictures it seems so that the 110V/230V goes directly into the computer PSU.

Hi,
This is my understanding of the power supply arrangements in the D8B CPU/PSU.
The AC supply enters through the IEC connector on the Sparkle AT computer power supply. It leaves the power supply and goes to a printed circuit power distribution board (It's the one with all the "push-on type connectors). From there it goes to the front panel power switch. It returns from the switch to the distribution board where it distributes power (through fuses) to the 3 power supplies:

1) the Sparkle AT computer supply.

2) the Astec 5V high current switched mode power supply

3) through a transformer to the "analog" power supply board. This board acts as a hub for all the DC supplies: + and - 16V, 48V phantom power, 5V from the Astec supply and 12V from the Sparkle AT power supply (via a 4 pin Molex type connector) It is from this board that the large cable connects to the console.

i made a quick documentation how to make the PSU/CPU fanless

IT IS NOT TESTED TILL NOW but it should work. Maybe somebody wants to try it with my help.

If you do this, you will loose the audio of your d8b but you will get a silent DAW controller (with probox or d8bridge)
