Going to buy a d8b, what to look for??? Now with photos!

Postby AvLee » Thu Jul 10, 2014 9:47 pm

Hi, I've been offered one of these desks and I probably would be allowed to take it away and demo it first.

Can you fine people please give me a list of pointers on what to look out for?

I.e software, cards, common faults, tests etc

Please bare in mind that I know NOTHING about these so please give me simple instructions.

I will be using it with Cubase 5 with plans to upgrade to 7.

Thanks in advance.

Please check the d8b database. There's an awesome checklist for the prospective purchaser of previously loved d8bs.

Hey man thanks but I've already looked in there and there's a lot of schematics and maintenance related stuff.

I'm kind of looking for some basic pointers or more like a check list.

Yep sorry Bitsnyc, didn't spot it when I looked.

Anyway, here she is, she is on 3.0 firmware when I booted it up. I haven't got any paperwork, manuals, disks or anything else with it, what you see is what I got! Opinions please.

@avlee

How much are you getting it for? I run 3.0 as well as do many others and its hard to fine 5.1 systems. There is a guy on ebay that sells braincard w/ auth codes for $349 from time to time. So keep that in mind when you get ready to complete your purchase.

Depending on your setup you may or may not have enough analog in/out. If this is for project/home use im sure you'll be fine. The 4x digital I/o cards on the board is enough to get as many channels 1:1 (24ch tdif) "in the box" but you'll still need a interface for your daw. If you dont have one factor that also.

If you mix in daw, the plugins in your DAW make up for not having UFX cards/effects authorized. But UFx cards go for $150/ea on ebay and MFx cards go for $75/each on ebay. The same guy selling brain cards can sell you ALL d8b plugin codes for cheap. I don use them.

Umm, apogee word clock...dont have one on this board, gotta get one if you got other gear you need to sync wors clock with. There is 3 on ebay now. Im about to buy one myself.

Other than that, test all the in/outs S best you can. Faders etc. too!

If you are paying more than $800 for this board...well, Ill just say that you can do better. But if its working fine and suits your needs go for it.

Hey topdiggy, thanks for the reply.

Basically, I don't have any outboard gear any more (apart from a few mics and mic preamps) and I mainly produce dance music. The only thing that drew me to this board (and this site) was the "bridge". I use Cubase 5, soon upgrading to 7 and all I want this desk to do, is be a DAW for cubase, emulating the mixer and make use of the Transport panel and have a couple of different pairs of monitors running off it. Do any of the things that you've mentioned effect the desk for this use. It seems that I came at the right time, as I'm waiting eagerly for peoples opinions on this new "bridge".

Just a quick question, will I still able to pass analogue audio into the board using the "bridge" an digital audio back into my soundcard? Or is it a case of one or the other?

Also, I'm getting this desk at a bargain price.
